Just a heads up as I haven't seen anyone list these symptoms.
My 2001 MK4 TDI 115 started running really rough last week with a drastic loss of power. No Engine management lights appeared BTW.
It was prone to stalling at take off and "hunting" with puffs of black smoke while cruising. A chattering noise appeared now and again also, sounded like a solenoid or an injector, not sure.
Disconnecting the air flow meter made it driveable again while still down on power.
Took a punt on a new air flow sensor and its now sorted. Happy days.
I Have owned car from new and its never been chipped etc. hence the easy fix posibly.

Was this engine run with the correct oil? as PD Engines demand alot of respect? Was the car regularly serviced? These engines can be your best friend, or your worst nightmare.

Yes mate its always had the PD grade oil and I have resisted the temptation of remaps etc. Its at 125k basically trouble free at this stage and running sweet as a nut
