Has anyone noticed this effect with the brakes on the Mk 6:

Sometime when stationary with the engine idling (eg. at a junction), the brake servo assistance seems to temporarily disappear - ie. it's like stepping on a brick. Once on the move, the assistance returns to normal.

Is this right, or is there a fault with my brakes ?

    Chris.

Ooh, I'm not sure about this. I haven't noticed it on mine, but I suppose the servo assistance shouldn't be needed at standstill.

I'd have a chat with your dealer, though, just to be on the safe side - you don't want that 'stepping on a brick' feeling at 60mph on the country roads!

That doesn't sound right at all as I certainly don't get this - You wouldn't expect servo assistance to dissapear - what if you were hit from behind and you couldn't stop your car as it rolls forward?

I'd go back to the dealer ASAP....

I sometimes get this on my MK5. I think I have a bad habbit of pumping my break pedal when I am stationary - this produces the effect that you are talking about? Any help?

I think it might be associated with the hill-hold function, since this applies the brakes fully, then there is no more room for the further pressure from the pedal. It would be consistent.

However, I am not completely sure, and will be letting my dealer have a look.

No split or poor connection in pipe that supplies vacuum to servo?

Just got back from my dealer, and the 'issue' was indeed an artefact of the hill hold function.

Sometimes, the hill hold will activate even on very slight inclines, so when you press and release the brake pedal, a second press then gives the 'dead pedal' effect because the brakes are already being fully applied by the hill hold.
