    Hi guys,

I've attached a picture to show the problem area.. hoping someone can investigate theirs or tell me what the problem is!

I opened my boot one day (today) and it wouldn't lock shut for some reason, it just "bounced" when I closed it. I've removed the trim and found a part of the mechanism that just seems limp and not on a spring which is what i'd expect. Can someone tell me if it is suppose to be springed, and/or what the issue is?

I was thinking of using a bit of tape, but that's stupid

    Thanks,

It looks like it has latched shut whilst open. Try Putting a screwdriver in between the tongue and the bottom of the "u" and pull the latch up until it clicks into place. See what this does.

This happened to me a while back. I took the mechanism of the boot lid which enables you to slide the metal part out of the black plastic sleeve. I found that the small expansion spring which keeps the latch in the correct position was broken at one end. The spring is shaped like a hook at each end and it had snapped at one end. I was able to form a new hook shape with a pair of pointed pliers and get it fitted back into place and it seemed to do the trick. I hope this helps

thanks Irishvw, i'll give that a try for sure!

Is it just a matter of undoing the two bolts to take the mechanism off to see this, or will I have to follow the haynes manual to take it off a different way?

Thanks again for all that looked too

just spotted this problem I too had with my 01 TDI Sport Passat boot lid. It would shut but not completely catch so you could pull it open without unlocking. Tried adjusting catch to no avail, removed trim, all bits seemed in one piece solenoid whirred so assumed ok. Whilst in my local garage with my old faithful Golf I asked about this and his tip was to clean all the muck on and around the barrel, also to open lid and put some 3 in one in and around the centre of lock, having the lid open makes it easier to squirt the oil in without it dribbling down the lid and bumper. Put key in and turn it several times to help lubricate. Guess what, it worked! this apparently happens because we use the remote so much the mechanics never really get fully moved and though the whirring was doing some movement it wasn't quite enough. I know this won't be the solution to all the boot lock problems but it will certainly be the cheapest fix, it was for me!
