I just bought a Mk5 Golf GT TDi ( 170) which I put in to a specialist today to have cruise control fitted. They successfully installed the indicator/cuise stalk is, and all wired up correctly, when they put it on the computer it seems to recognise the different functions e.g. set, accel, decel, but the cruise control won't "engage". The cruise light on the dash doesn't light. etc.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

possibly it is not coded in correctly. did you take it to a vw specialist?

Hi, I know you say they're specialists but have you actually tried using the cruise control? The reason I ask is that I've had cruise on two different 170's and the light behaved differently on both. On one car the light lit as soon as the cruise was switched on (rocker switch on top of left stalk) and on the other, the light only lit when the cruise was actually set to maintain a speed.

    Hi,

Thanks for the replies. The Cruise was fitted by a specialist.
I have tried using it, as did the specialist that fitted the module, tried on a few journeys at various speeds.

Does cruise have its own fuse?

I'll try and find out the coding that they used - which registers are the ones that affect cruise?

    Cheers

Had mine done by the dealer on a new car (2007). It didn't work. Six visits later, plus having the car plugged into the internet so that Herr Kloppenstrecker back at the factory could play with it it still didn't work. After robbing bits from a showroom model and playing swapsies it eventually ended up with a handful of new steering wheel and column control modules. Something to do with incompatible bits fitted ex-factory. I know my story is not the norm, but it's entirely possible you have the same problem.

The wife's was done at the same time and worked perfectly.

My advice - give your specialist another chance then get a refund and pay £150 for the dealer fit. A bit of ringing round and negotiating can get it for less than that.

Any fault codes? Did they fit the additional wire from the steering wheel control module up to the e-box? I had a car in today where I had to fit the extra wire, first one out of several I've done that needed it.

    Hi Shark,

The garage didn't fit the extra wire as there was "already one there". I spoke to the garage again yesterday and they said that when they were testing the fitting (via the VW/ audi diagnostics or VAG com) and the computer was recognising the pressing of all of the buttons e.g. accelerate , decelerate set, but not actually engaging. I have tried the system myself each day on my way to work but it doesn't engage.

    Sound about right?

I'll suggest that they may need to fit that wire.

    Cheers

had similar trouble with my cruise. but this was a dealer fit. they had to have it back 3 times before they could get it to work.

    they did it though.

never found out why they struggled.

Yes, even if the wire is missing you'll still get the functions showing in the measured block values in the ECU.. but will also get a "Cruise control stalk - Implausible signal" error once you start the engine and the cruise won't work.

Hope that helps them to sort it out

Steering column control unit comparability is the main reason and as shark has mentioned the activation hard wire direct to the engine ecu is another and fitment of the steering column control unit as these must be aligned correctly without force or the pins will not make full contact but by checking measured values in address 16 and 01 it can be determined if the cruise is working paying particular attention to the activated signal which must change from 0 to 1 and stay at 1 for operation if it pops back to 0 then the hardwire link is missing. The cruise operates over can bus and drive train as well as a hard-wire activation as abs, steering angle and engine ecu utilise the command so if the can signal is missing part of the byte information from a incorrect steering column control unit then the switch command will be missing as well as the hard-wire signal direct from the switch to the engine ecu. Also remember the brake switch and clutch switch must be working
