Well I cant believe it, I never thought I would do it but I have, I filled up my 2.5 TDI with --- PETROL --- £50.00 of it!
I got about 200 yards and it cut out, the fuel drain man came out and £140.00 later I was on my way and all was well, my question is has any body else done it and has any body had any problems afterwards.
    Signed, Annoyed Muppet.

I've always had the view that petrol in a diesel is never a good thing, diesel is a lubricant and petrol is a solvent and I reckon there could be untold damage to seals etc.

It's just a gut feeling, not a professional opinion.

    Hi,

As far as I'm aware, when used in pure form for such a short run such as yours, it will just have a solvent cleaning effect on your engine & filters (becuase petrol is a higher level product of the oil "cracking" process).

If you'd added 1/2 tank of petrol to 1/2 tank of diesel, the car had kept running and you'd not realised your mistake for a while; I believe the effects would be massive wear on your engine as unleaded contains very little lubricating properties compared to Diesel.

I've heard of some people who put 1ltr of petrol in with their diesel every few months, just for a "clear-out" - probably does the same job as that expensive Reddex!

That could have been a very much more expensive mistake than £140. There a couple of products on the market to help prevent this. One is simply a tag that fits on the fuel cap with a large DIESEL printed on it costing £2.99. The other is an audible device that fits (sticks) behind the lid of the fuel access and apparently reacts when the lid is opened and gives an audible warning saying THINK DIESEL it costs £7.99.

Both these items can be bought from an auto firm called Speeding.co.uk and delivery is free. I don't have any connection with this firm, just saw them advertised there.
