Agreed, until recently (when it was written off by a stupid woman ) I had a PD Passat that had covered 227,000 miles and was still returning 55mpg day in, day out. Beyond regular servicing, the only thing I had to attend to were 2 lower control arms where the bushes were worn (£150), apart from that it was a fantastic car, and I miss it terribly.
Nothing to see here, move along..

Just make sure whatever you go for, that it has had oil changes on time, every time, this is crucial for the PD engine. I'd walk away unless you can see it has a full service history, plenty about, you can afford to be picky.

Watch out for leaky rads a common problem rectified by replacement i'm afraid.

Blocked drain hole under the battery this can become a big problem, make sure the bung has been taken out.

Good service history a must and also the right type of engine oil another must.

Other than that not much else, i'm on my second B5.5 tdi sport and would recommend them, biggest thing for me was a leaking rad
If it ain't broke leave it alone!!!

Bought my 2001 Passat 130PD in 2004 with 120000 miles on clock (ex lease).
Now has 231000 and so far only had to change:
Rear axle (cos bent when I bought it)
CAT + full exhaust (original exhaust did 185000 miles)
    Charge pressure sensor

plus consumables such as Brakes, CV's, tyres, MAF etc.

Due some suspension arms/bushes I think and currently got the common lock failures.

Car was serviced regular as lease car, and now I service it myself regular. Love the car, and would certainly recommend.
