I have got an overheating problem with my 2.0 petrol 2003 passat. Driving down the motorway the temperature gauge suddenly rose to 130 degrees. I stopped and opened the bonnet. Everything seemed fine - belts ok, fans turning, water in expansion tank. GOt back in the car and the temperature had returned to 90. COnitiued driving and the gauge kept on rising up to the red area. I turned on the heater to high and coasted and the temperature returned to normal. Carried on for another 20 miles with the heater on, temperture going up and down.

I changed the temperature sensor 2 years ago - problem was gauge taking a very long time to register. Could it be this again or is it more likley to be the water pump?
