How can I find out if my Mk3 Golf GTI 8V 1997 AGG Engine has an immobiliser?

I'd have thought that they would be fitted as standard by that year. There's no button on the key, so it's not remote central locking. I've fed the option codes into igorweb, which doesn't mention anything about immobiliser / anti theft.

    Any ideas?

It should definitely have an immobiliser. I think after 1995 it was compolsary all manufacturers had to fit it. I've got a 1994 CL and I thought it did not have it. The key has no buttons on it, but when I went to make a spare key, they said 25pounds because it has an immobiliser.

Yes it does, by a transponder chip in the key detected by a reader coil around the barrel and an immobiliser ECU under the dash which instructs the ECU to run or not.
