    Hello,

I'm new to this forum but i'm currently thinking of purchasing a new golf, however not sure which model to go for between the 1.6 tdi se or 2.0 tdi se.

I just wanted to get some feedback on what people would recommend. I currently do approx 15,000 a year, mostly motorway driving.

I've spoken to friend who know abit more about cars than myself and they said that a tdi would be better on a bigger engine i.e. 2.0. However I've been to my local dealership who advised me to choose the 1.6 based on the resale value, which to me is quite important after 3 years. He said it would be better on the 1.6 new engine rather than the 2.0 discontinued model?

Any advice / help on the pro's and con's over the two models would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

For 15k, I'd consider a petrol as I don't think you'll see the cost benefit.

As for resale - I don't think a salesman can realistically predict what will happen in 3 years, can he? If you got a discounted 2.0 then you might get a better proce for it, thereby reducing the cost benefit anyway.

You need to choose what feels right for you - 5 or 6 gears, more power, better economy, more torque, whether you need to tow, what you need to carry, trim levels, etc. The salesman might have an alterior motive (such as an incentive to sell 1.6tdis or the dealership have a bunch "sitting around") - forget what he says - do what feels right for you.

    Or go to another dealership.

I find that argument does not work out, yes the car cost more, but it everyday costs that hurt, not the purchase price. I do 15K a year and would not do that in a Petrol.

If you buy a £1000 car or a £10000 car it the bill at the pump each time that empty the bank balance. I suppose if your on a lease plan then it may be slightly different but not allot

PS buy the 2.0 it will out perform the 1.6

I guess you're right on the Petrol argument especially as Diesel and Petrol prices are pretty closely matched these days. If prices remain the same, then try them both, but consider your wallet as said.

And if you're bothered about gears, it only comes with 5 gears (unless you go for the DSG)

PPS - God yes, buy the 2.0 diesel

Thanks for your replies. That was my other question - does the 2.0 tdi se come standard with 5 speed, not 6 speed. I find this quite odd, as I would have thought a 2.0 litre would automatically come with 6.

    Any reason for this?

    The 2.0TDi has 6 gears - the 1.6 Diesels have 5 :

Hefty price difference - at list anyway....

    I think the 1.6 105 replaces the 2.0 110 - too much overlap I presume...

    WAIT
Theres lots of confusion in this thread

    There are two 2.0 TDI SE models, a 140 with a 6-speed box and a 110 with a 5-speed box.

The 110 has now been discontinued at the factory, and replaced with the 1.6 TDI 105 (5-speed) which although slightly down on bhp has the same torque and does a lot more mpg.

The 1.6 TDI 105 is a much better buy than the now discontinued 2.0 TDI 110, and the 2.0 TDI 140 is better than both of them but expensive.

Ahhh - in that case - don't buy the 2.0-110, go for the newer 1.6 (unless you plan an immediate remap that is!).... I thought we were talking about choosing between a 2.0-140 and a 1.6-105...

Note that it (the 110bhp 2.0) is not listed on the VW website though...
