Hi all. I currently own an 05 a4 b7 2ltr 140hp s line saloon. I'm looking to change it for a cabriolet. I'm very well versed with the model of my own car and known issues etc.

Is there any known problems with the cabs, or any particular engine or gearbox to stay away from?

Which engine is the one to go for. I probably wouldn't go for the 3.0 one.

I've heard the 2.4 is abit weak, but how would it compare to my 140 fir acceleration, if it's the same I'd be happy. What about the 1.8t.

Any help or advice on this topic would be great, going to be start looking and want to know what ones to look at.

    Thanks all.

    Hi mate.
Ive got a 1.8t 163 and really quite happy with it.
Its a bit on the heavy side which you can feel when cornering but when she's going she flies pretty well.
My mate has a 3 ltr model which pulls really well and seems to be better on fuel than mine. Maybe the engine is more suited to the weight of the car?

Thanks for your input. I was briefly thinking of the 3.0, but a quick insurance quote soon put me off. I think I'm heading slightly towards the 2.4 manual.

Are these good reliable engines. Any issues. What about mileage, the ones in looking at are 100k plus, this a problem. My diesel has 120k and no problems, but I think diesels can handle mileage better.
    Thoughts on mileage?

    Many thanks

Had no major issues with her over the last 4 years. Only thing was the oil pressure light came on but was really near the garage I use and a common fault is that the oil pick up pipe in the sump gets clogged up which starves the engine of oil which ain't good! You have to take the undertray out to remove the sump then give the gauze a good ol clean but all fine apart from that.
Had the roof off a few times so far this year so you forget all these troubles when your cruising!!! Get one, you know you want to!!!!!

Just got a good insurance quote for the 3.0. Is this the engine to go for? Again same questions as above. Any problems, reliable?

    Thanks

Thanks galler, yeah I really want one. My b7 is being advertised in the morning. Any features to look out for. Are the roofs electric? Operated by key, or is it an extra. Wee things like that to look for. Thanks

    Remote roof open/close is a £250ish retrofit.

Do you do a lot of motorway miles? I have a 3.2 Q B7 6-speed manual cab and it could do with being taller geared on the motorway. Love the car and this is the only flaw imo, but it's a fairly significant flaw and I prefer my 1.9 Tdi A6 for motorway use.

30 MPG no probs on decent journeys in the Cab.

Thanks. Not many motor way miles, just the odd time. Just mostly a and b roads then around town.

    Hi buddy , I run a 2.4 v6 manual 5 speed '52 plate with around 65,000 miles
I test drove two 1.8 turbos and in my opinion they were struggling to move what is a bit of a fat lump.
My 2.4 is only 170 bhp, so not massively more powerful than the 4 cylinder turbo, but I felt that it was a smoother option which delivers reasonable pace and thats what I settled for..plus the six sounds so nice.
If pre 2005 avoid multitronic auto AKA cvt, if you want an auto you go for the tiptronic auto which is the one you get in a quattro
A six speed manual can also be had which would obviously improve fuel economy and the v6 turbodiesels are very smooth and torquey
As said above the roof is electric and can be operated via the keypad/fob if the module is fitted ( optional at new I believe)
We get around 35 mpg with 2.4 5 speed which is not bad for a big lump

    Hi Hardcorism,

Not sure if you are still in the Market but I'm currently selling my 3.0 litre sport Cab with all the trimmings and 54k miles right now.

I tried all the cabs before settling for the 3.0 manual as all the others seemed not cope with the weight. Plus, in order to get them going I had my foot flat - so poor fuel consumption.

It's up on pistonheads etc right now. I'm not leaving the Audi fold - just bought an S4 Avant!

    Cheers,

    David
