Hi - i am new to this website but would appreciate any help that i could get.
I recently bought a 2001 Y plated 2.0 litre 8 valve GTI Golf (engine code AQY and vin wvwzzz1Jz 1W421358).
On restarting the engine after a 15-20minute break (after it has attained working temperature) it frequently races to anything between 2,000 and 4,000 RPM (sometimes hunting in between) until gradually settling back to its normal idling speed of 800RPM.
This only occures for a few seconds and not on all occasions.
Shortly after buying the car the engine check light illuminated and after fault reading it ( 5 codes present) i decided to change the #1 Lambda sensor whilst carrying out a full service. This then cleared but it then came back on after about 6 weeks.Since then it comes off and on at faily frequent intervals (it currently displays codes 16500,16556 and 17536).
    Any ideas??
    Regards berksboy 26

air mass meter!!!!!!!! its a common fault and can bring up strange unrelated faults and cause all sorts of problems

check the date printed on the air mass meter....be like 10/01 for example...may never been changed before...

unplug it and see if it changes anything..like makes it run better and better performance etc
