I don't understand how a supermarket chain can supply diesel which doesn't conform to the relevant british standards, without properly advising customers of this fact?

does not compute. more to the point and probably one for you to dig into Ben, can we be certain that other supermarkets/petrol chains aren't doing the same?

I made an enquiry the other day and i got the following reply.

thanks for you enquiry regarding the B30 product that we sell to Morrisons. I'm off sick at the moment (swine flu!) so I'll get the technical data to you on my return.

With regards to the product it is formally approved by a number of vehicle manufacturers ie. Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot/Citroen and also fulfils the requirements of most Japanese manufacturers as well as being used by Ford as a reference fuel at their Dagenham diesel plant.

With regards to VW, it is true that because of warranty issues in the past with Bosch, that they will not warranty the product. Unfortunately not all B30's are the same, most are just BioDiesel mixed with normal Diesel in a 30:70 ratio. The B30 was supply however has a guaranteed final spec, and apart from the BioDiesel content meets BS EN 590 in every other regard.

Customers who have used B30 on vehicles that are out of warranty ie. have run on normal diesel for some time have found that the initial fills "clean out" the engine system and they have had to change filters. Once this has been done though the product has worked perfectly and with no detriment to mpg.
When i get the technical data i'll post that too.

I know mine is an older model , 99 T plate , But that comment from audi is inacurate seeing as my owners manual states " In accordance with E DIN 51 506 . If your audi is a diesel model, it can also run on biodiesel (veg based diesel fuel)"

Though google dosent seem to yeild any results when I search for the E DIN line ?

The fuel flap on my (French) 2006 140 Passat has a sticker saying not to use biodiesel, and to the best of my knowledge it doesn't have a DPF (no, the car, not the fuel flap....).

There's also a new petrol on sale here which is reckoned not to be suitable for older cars.
