    there use to be a aftermarket suround that you could fit to the mk2 golf that goes where the cassette holder should be.
    look at ebay for it, you might be able to pick one up.

    what gauges did you get ?

    oild temp ? voltage ? oil pressure ?

    I've fitted several of these sets over the years, they are relatively easy to install. As rightly pointed out, you can get a gauge panel that replaces the radio or there are 32 other options:
    1. An a pillar mounted binacle or;
    2. Make your own pane with a 52mm tank cutter to go in the radio slot or in the lower console (not so good if you want to monitor on the run).

    Having decided where to fit them, installation is relatively easy too:

    Voltmeter - connect brown wire to earth and the other to a switched live (anything which only works with the ignition on)
    Oil temp - connect brown to earth and the sensor input to the oil temp sensor in the engine bay - position depends on whether the car is 8 or 16v.
    Oil pressure - again, brown to earth and the sensor input to the oil pressure sensor that you should have bought with the guages from the donor car and installed on your engine in leiu of the pressure sensor. Make sure that you reconnect the original pressure sensor wire to the fixed value output of the oil pressure sensor when installed.
    Gauge lighting is simple brown to earth, blue and grey lighting live to the lighting circuit for your fand control illimination.

    Hope this helps.
