We have a 2001 golf 1.4 manual, after 100 miles or approx 1.5 hrs driving the oil warning light comes on. I have checked the level which is ok, removed the sender unit and replaced with a pressure gauge. The Haynes manual ( H'mm not as good as they were in the 70's/80's)said the pressure should be 2bar (30 psi) at 2000rpm. Actual pressure is 4bar at idling, approx 1000rpm and 4.8bar at 2000rpm. I am now confident that the oil pump is ok, and now suspect the oil sender unit (pressure switch). Priced at my local vw outlet today, £9.25 which I dont think is too bad. One thing that worry's me is that after 100 miles the oil is obviously quite hot and will have lost some of it's viscosity, hence if the oil pump is worn it may be incapable of maintaining a healthy pressure. Anyone have any thoughts or comments as to what may be wrong. My nephew is putting his vagcom on it tomorrow, I will let you all know if we find anything.

you are wasting your time checking cold oil pressure.
oil pressure checks should be made at operating temp.
you haven't mentioned the mileage on the engine,or the age / type of oil.
causes of low oil pressure,as you may know, are worn crankshaft bearings, worn oil pump,
sticking relief valve,--old oil, --wrong type of oil.
first time i was up a ladder i was down a well
    4th cog,--two to go

    Hello StewyL,
Thanks for the reply and advice, I agree about the cold oil, but I had to start somewhere, I now have a bench mark reading. The car is a 2001 Y reg, mileage is 56,000 and has full service history from a vag dealership, I can only presume the oil is correct.I have bought a new oil pressure sender which I am fitting tonight.
