Smoke from driver side wheel arch!!!

HI there folks - I'm new to the forum but I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on a problem that I noticed today on my 2000 A4 SE 1.8.

It looks as if smoke is coming from under the driver side wheel arch and there is a bad smell of burning rubber but this only seems to occur when I have to put the 'full lock' on the steering wheel for parking etc.

I was wondering if anyone eslse has had a similar problem and if so what was the cause?

As you can probably guess I'm not exactly an expert on these matters!!
