    My turn...

My PD130 has just gone over 221,000 and its been running a remap since 184,000miles.

The torque is an absolute blast, and you will not get that in a lower capacity non turbo petrol. There is now parity on the price of Petrol and diesel. So, diesel turbo torque and reduced consumption, it's a no brainer.

Depends on how many miles a year you do. I really wanted a 2.5 TDI, but decided the 1.9tdi was the sensible cost option on doing 30,000 miles per year.

If I drive sensible and keep under 80mph, my average is 53mpg.

The engine has plenty of power if driven well i.e. kept in the optimal rev power band. But, yes, a standard 130pd runs out of power above 90mph - but many people run the risk of driving above that speed most of the time!!

In the last 15,000 miles the intercooler pipe work on mine has started to become weak/slack - I put that down to the mileage. Its still on original clutch, flywheel and injectors, so I believe a well looked after example will be good value.

As is a turbo on any car.

Just by a petrol then if you can't look at a diesel car without cringing about the fuel pump. The diesels are far better and more reliable than you could obviously imagine.

Would anyone have the old fashioned fuel consumption figures for urban, 56 mph and 75 mph for both these engines. I drive about 15,000 miles a year and need to get at least 40 to 45 mpg. I don1t know if this is achievable with the petrol. I would welcome all opinions as I have not previously owned an Audi. Thanks.
Do you REALLY need to ask ?.

This isnt such a big problem with diesels as it is with petrol. but there is an added risk.

I would suggest that the advanatgeous of a tdi over a non turboed petrol are enormous to out weigh this.

If you go for a 1.8 you will suffer with fuel economy and the engine will be completely knackered by 150k, where as the large capacity non turbo engines, you will suffer more than the cost of a replacement turbo in additional fuel costs.

If we could get out of this whole turbo failure mode, that would be great.

I have 2 TDI vehicles with a combined mileage of 175k and neither of them has suffered turbo failure. I am not in the minority either.

The turbos on diesels dont suffer the same stresses as most petrol turbos, my old passat tdi was on nearly 200k with the original turbo.
