Hi all, I am a very new member so please be gentle with me. I am looking to buy a 1998/2000 A6 Avant auto. I can`t decide whether to get the 2.5TDi or the 2.4 petrol. 2/3rds of my journeys are on spanish motorways and given the fact that the spanish are abismall drivers I play safe and seldom exceed 60 m.p.h. Would anyone have the old fashioned fuel consumption figures for urban, 56 mph and 75 mph for both these engines. I drive about 15,000 miles a year and need to get at least 40 to 45 mpg. I don1t know if this is achievable with the petrol. I would welcome all opinions as I have not previously owned an Audi. Thanks.

If you drive carefully ie. looking ahaead and using acceleration sense, with mostly motorway driving then you`ll see 45-50mpg with the 2.5 TDI multitronic or manual. Urban/Mway driving with me is a 60/40 split and I average 38mpg with a 2.5 multitronic.

the 2.5 tdi engine has more than enough power and is very economical if chosen and virtually bullitt proof

    I've got a 2.4 auto. If I sit at a steady 80 - 90, it turns out 32mpg, never tried a steady 60, but imagine it would better by 4 - 6 mpg.

round town with my standard heavy boot, I get down to mid 20's.

The V6 is such a fun engine, it likes to be driven.

I would love to see you doing close to 40Mpg at over a ton in a v6 petrol automatic ! I have 3 v6 tdi (a c5 a6 Fwd manual, a passat b5 Fwd manual and a b5 a4 manual quattro). The c5 a6 will return 36Mpg acording to the DIS (tunned to 180Bhp), the passat close to 40 (thinking its remapped as it is as fast as the c5) and the quattro 36 all average. The thing is the quattro is me daily driver with 30%motorway-70% slow traffic in london and the tank will last about 650 Km wich is about 400 miles. I do not have a light foot either and i boot it past the 100Mph every time i get the chance. Its well below the manufacturer published fuel consumption wich is 10.8L/100Km urban, 6.8L/100km motorway and 7.8 conbined measured fom brim to brim. Get the 6 speed manual and dont bother with the 4Wd unless you tow or drive on the twisty roads as quattros are wasted on motorways or town. Many people think if the v6 is a diesel engine it needs to be economical !?! Think about the heavy car with lots of toys that needs hauling around. The great thing with the v6 diesel engine is that will cruise all day long at 100+ Mph and still return 35-40Mpg and will rev at a relaxing 2800 rpm in 6th gear with masses of torque and if you need to get it going you can allways drop a few cogs! All me cars have bigger alloy wheels(passat rides on factory fitted 17"BBS Largos) the c5 audi on 19" Rs6 alloys and the quattro on 18" Rs4 alloys. If you keep it on standard rims and drive the v6 like a noon you will see 45+ Mpg on motorway if you dont go over 80Mph. If you still need to get auto then make shure its a quattro model as the multitronic/CVT on FWD models is very problematic on the 2.5 tdi and cannot witstand the torque the engine puts. The quattro has a stronger ZF gearbox with a conventional torque convertor and is less economical than the CVT/ manual box.

Hi, I used to own a 2.5tdi 160bhp with a multitronic gearbox. I was getting 35 mpg most of the time on motorway journeys that ocasionally involved overtaking at 90mph. But sometimes 30mpg or 9l/100km. Now I have a 1.9 tdi and it does at worst 45 mpg combined. It fees much more economical.
Amongst the diesel v6's, the 2.5tdi is not a particulary economical engine. It has its virtues - nice noise, huge torque - but not economy
It is also known to be a more problematic engine than the 1.9tdi pd.
I'd say forget petrol and try and get the 1.9tdi 130 pd diesel if you can ...and steer clear of the multitronic auto box.

    Cheers.

Of those two engines get the 2.5TDi. The 2.4 feels underpowered and needs to be revved, and they drink more oil than petrol!!
