Good friend of mine has just got his 2004 Audi A3 2.0TDI back from an Audi dealer service and they have told him his cooling fans are running all of the time which has been quoted at £500 for new fans and shroud to fix the problem.

Anything else he can check before he empties his wallet?

sensor or relay perhaps?? but Audi must know best?

I'm not sure if these cars are affected but the resistor packs used to go on the Mk4 Golfs leaving the fans pulsing on and off. Not sure if this is a similar failure but it's worth a look before taking it to the dealers.

    Hi,

My wife's A3 2.0TDi had the same problem two weeks ago. It went in for a new cambelt and water pump, and the next time she drove it the radiator cooling fans would not switch off, and they drained the battery as the car stood overnight. Once she managed to get it started and took it back to the dealer, they diagnosed a faulty fan control unit, but said they could not order these as a separate part, so we had to have a complete new twin fan assembly fitted - the cost was around £380. The dealer claimed that the failure of the control unit was pure coincidence, and nothing to do with the cambelt and water pump change...
