After 15 months of loving my A4, I had cause last Saturday to call out Roadside assistance, the damn thing had gone nuts.

The day before the DPF light came on, closely followed by the engine management light (flashing glow plug light) I called the dealer to see what to do, and was advised to try a regeneration, instructions in handbook.

On teh Saturday morning, I tried this, and failed, resulting in only the emissions light being added to everything. I called into the dealer in Aylesbury, where I happened to be, and they said too late. Once the management light comes on, a regeneration can't happen. But it came on 10 seconds after the DPF light, so how do I achieve a 20 min regen, if given 10 seconds

Anyway, I called roadside assistance, and he plugged in pc, and performed a roadside emergency regeneration, which second time through fixed the fault, first time failed cos he was impatient. My exhaust got up to major heights of 650 C, from normal operating of 300C, and it pinged a lot.

Today the car went to the dealership, on the mechanics advice, to be told nothing wrong. But the cars done 12,000 miles, in Milton Keynes where you boot the thing off every roundabout. The night before it had done a 50 mile journey, the weekend before a 150 mile journey.

So now it look like I have to drive my car long or short journeys, knowing at any minute the DPF light could come on. There is nothing I can do to stop it. I regularly hit 4,000 rpm, I regularly drive longer distances, I use Shell diesel 90% of the time. I am driving a ticking breakdown machine.

So be warned out there, the 2.0 TDI, 143 version clogs its filter up without warning.

If anyone out there knows what else I could possibly have done, then please tell me. I did not buy an Audi to have it pack up on me.

    Gary.

PS, I also lost the turbo throughout this, it aint much fun to drive as a 2.0 DI

I drive a multitronic so it doesn't often see high revs. What is the regeneration procedure? Should i be giving the car some stick now and then?

No too much stick aint good for regeneration.

You have to try at over 60 km/h (manual says so) for up to 20 mins, in 4th or 5th, manual gearbox, or in sport mode. That is supposed to elevate the temps in the exhaust, and blow the soot out, or burn it off.

My roadside assistance guy said, get on the motorway and follow the lorries in 4th gear is best way.

    Hope this helps.

giving the car stick will not prolong dpf regen and to be honest it has no bearing on it as the rac man says 4 th gear in the slow lane is the best option for regen and if you ignore the regen then the ash content will increase reducing the possibility of a successful regen and a dpf will be required.Exhaust gas temp readings in excess of 800 generally mean the one of the temp sensors has failed. To add the history of attempted regens stores in the ecu so the dealer can calculate if a warranty claim can be submitted if its found the regen has been ignored and no sensor errors consequential faults then the dpf will not be covered under warranty however the common rail engine is more efficient than the pd and far less prone to dpf failure

Yes - My dealer stated that some are fine. Others have issues. They have had cars coming back to the dealer within 1000 miles with the DPF light on.

Just the DPF light wouldn't bother me too much, as I know how to clear it. The fact the engine management came on straight away as well seems to have been lost on the dealer. I have been told by two dealers, that once that light comes on as well, then a driving regen is not possible, and it has to be done stationary, via the computer. So basically in my situation I was stuffed.

Damo - It could be in the course of all those miles you do, there are periods where you happen to be driving at the right speed for long enough, and thus not even know you are doing it. Doing 80mph in 6th, will not cause a regen I'm told, nor will my driving in Milton Keynes, as it is constant start/stop. I have some journeys where I could drive in 4th at the right speed instead of 6th, so may start doing that every 6 months or so.

    Cheers.

Sorry to hear about the troubles, but this bit really made me smile - "the cars done 12,000 miles, in Milton Keynes where you boot the thing off every roundabout". Indeed

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, a friend recently introduced the concept of occasionally booting your diesel though sounds like there's all sorts of modern Audi cleverness at work here (or not..).

All I can say is I'm at about 15 months, 18,000 miles and no problems, so best of luck.

Anything less than 70 between roundabouts, and you are a menace unfortunately.

I'm still unsure about what to do, and whether to try and change my driving style. Obviously the nature of my driving at the moment is not cleaning the filter. However, where possible I do the speed limit, and long periods of driving at 60 km/h in 4th don't come into my driving. Even when I was trying to clean the filter on the Saturday morning, driving at 45mph, the bloomin thing was advising me to be in 6th, and not 4th.

If the computer is smart enough to know something is wrong, then it should advise to drive in the gear that may well fix it. Mind you it has also told me to be in 3rd at 30mph before, so that doesn't bode well.

Anyway, the car after having the regen done, is now some 3 or 4 mpg better, so keep an eye on your fuel consumption. If you appear to be getting less than you used to, wait for the lights

    Best of luck.

I think you misread a8 tech. I tried to cos the dealer told me to. It didn't work, hence the call out
