    Hello
I am new to this site.
Just want a bit of advice.
I am considering buying a 1998 s reg a4 1.6 estate and just wanted to know what to look out for in terms of any problems etc.

the car is dark blue, has 110,000 on the clock and has just had a brand new MOT.
It sits on 4 brand new tyres and is imaculate other than a stain on the back seat which will shampoo out and a broken cup holder.

the guy wanted £1200 for it but i have agreed £950.

it is fully serviced and all docs are there. Mileage is genuine and it did an unbeleivable 400 miles between the last MOT and the one last week.

What are these cars like in terms of fuel economy, performance, running costs etc?

    Many thanks for your assistance

Personally I'd avoid the 1.6 engine. They're under-powered in Avant guise. You should be able to pick up an early 1.9 TDi (90PS or 110PS) for the same money. Will probably have higher mileage, however the engine is bullet-proof.

Only things to watch out for are that the timing belt and waterpump have been done (every 60k) otherwise you're looking at a £400 bill. Suspension should be rattle-free without any clonks. Also check body panels. Audis are galvanised, so any rust could be the result of a poor repair job or neglect.

Lastly check the dashboard doesn't light up like a christmas tree after ignition. ABS, airbag lights should illuminate briefly then go out.
