About six months ago, I noticed my temp indicator was acting 'funny' in that when I was parked at some lights, I managed to give time to look at the dashboard and noticed the gauge dropped from a constant 90 deg to more-or-less zero. It was a cold day so assumed that with it being only a 1.4e, cooled-down quickly.

Six months on (I really should pay more attention to the dash shouldn't I) when driving back from MK to Sheffield yesterday, I noticed that it was reading zero again after climbing the M1 hill towards the M42 junction.

Today then, I watched it all the way to work (occaisionally looking out the windscreen for pedestrians, cars, etc) and it didn't flinch.

Getting to the point then, the unit looks knackerd so how do I replace as my Haynes manual doesn't cover my crappy 1.4

Do Motormania carry a good enough replacement part, how easy is it to fit and where does it go?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

Ok, where is the 'Temp Sender'? and how do I 'reset fault memory'?

This is looking to be a bigger issue than my initial request for help.

    Can 'Crasher' please reply?

You want to hope it is your temp sensor rather than the dash pod
Temp sensor approx £25 and can take you approx half hour to do
Dash pod £hundreds and dealer only job....
Haynes should have that in surley?

    Sarah,

I was driving home tonight and noticed that the temp was showing 90deg (generally average) and pointed this out to the missus. Seconds later, it dropped back to zero even though I was still driving!

My manual (Haynes) talks about the sensor but states: 1.4 engine, see chapter 3 section 6 where this talks about the throttle housing.

Still waiting for someone to point me in the right direction though. Where is the coolant sensor?

Have you done a search? There have been many threads on this topic.

the temp sener is on the gearbox side of engine
they are either black green or grey dependant on model
held in with small plastic clip and they have a seal replace with the same and if you do when cold you can save you anti freeze but check seal comes out with sender

If you change it yourself make sure you get a retaining clip! I snapped mine when taking the old one off & couldn't use my car for a day as the shop was shut, they are only 99p or so from GSF.

Quote from a New Beetle sensor change

"Coolant sensor change - Loosen the coolant tank cap to relieve any pressure that might be in the system, then put it back on, tight. Locate the coolant temp sensor and unplug the electrical connector. The sensor is sealed with an o-ring and held in position with a clip. Pull the clip, then wiggle and pull on the sensor to remove it from it's well. With the cap on the coolant bottle, you should lose very little coolant but it also pays to have the new parts ready to go in immediately. Remove and replace the o-ring (might want to lube it with a little Vaseline or similar), seat the new sensor, push in the retainer clip. Re-attach the electrical connnector."

    Hope this helps.
