I've had the warning a few times, so I rang Cardiff Audi who told me it was a common thing, they advised me to clean the fluff out of the recesses on the side of the key. Havn't had the warning since

My ignition lock failure warning light came on a few times over the past month. Was booked in for service at Colchester Audi and phoned them to tell them of the issue. They said it was a common fault and would order the part and replace under warranty. Didn't have to push and couldn't argue with the service I received. They also replaced the two plastic boot hinge covers on the saloon under warranty - I only asked for the broken one too be swapped. Can not fault the service I received - until I was quoted for replacing 4 tyres @ £190 per corner!

Depending on the size and make of tyre, that may not be a bad quote..

Having just searched online I think you are quite right. Even a mid range tyre is £160 fitted. They are a 255/35 R19 96Y tyre and sadly I need all 4.

So, im now having this issue intermittently

Ive tried the brand new spare key and it still happens.

The igntion barrel was replaced just over 2 years ago now for an issue of a sticking key....so out of the 2 years parts warranty.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

It doesn't come up all the time.

I noticed that i cant put on my steering lock now though.

    Any help appreciated.

    What model have you?
I did not think any B8s had an ignition barrel and I don't know how to operate
the steering lock which I assume is operated electronically if at all, by using the
    dash-mounted key system.

I see. It sounds as though you may have to replace the key socket fitting but
presumably you have tried cleaning the key and what you can reach of the key socket?

Indeed. Tried the cleaning the socket and key....although we have a brand new key and that didn’t work either.

Has anyone had the socket fitting replaced? If so how much? Can I do it myself?
