I have a 2001 TDI AVF engine. Yesteday noticed some hesitancy when I put my footdown and also black smoke. Discoverd the hose coming down from the turbo has a split in it. VW want £82.73, which seems crazy for a bit of rubber hose but guess thats how they make their money.

But before I change this should I check anything else? It was the original hose that split, and being close to the turbo, guess heat could have acclerated it's demise. Is it possible there could be a blockage or restriction somewhere which caused a pressure buidup and it found this weak spot?

Anyway and advise on what checks I should do, before changing this split hose much appreciated

There is nothing you can really do except replace the hose. This is something that just happens through time.

Cheers Kenney, read a lot about intake manifold getting sootted up from the ERG recirculation, don't know if that puts enough backpressure on the pipes enough to pop them. But suspect this one is is just age & heat related

Got the hose from VW, and was not impressed by its quality. Where the hose goes into the metal collar, the rubber on the hose had been shaved by more than a millimetre to fit inside the collar. Clearly this will be an area of weakness. The original one I took off was much higher quality and also had a fabric jacket on it to protect from heat.

I am not sure the replacement one will last 8 years as the original one did? Perhaps this is a cunning way of supplying sub standard parts which will not last as long so they can keep relieving you of £83 every couple of years!!

Oh car is back to normal with the new hose fitted ….:-)

Was the split readily visible as I have the same problem and that must be the only hose not to have been replaced? Mine is also a 2001 so has the original whick looks (and feels) sound, but how much of a leak is needed to make a difference?

As the collar of the hose is the weakest point I would check there. Mine was very obvious from the big wooshing noise it made.

Yep , agree, you just have to buy the hose. I tried repairing mine with all sorts of enginuity, but without success.

After some well documented entries on the site, I discovered it was a split hose that caused my probs.

I too noticed the sleeve was missing, but since it has been replaced all is well. There is no other solution - trust me!
