    Hi,

I've recently been encountering some major faults on my A4 2.0 tdi SE. Below is the list of problems and history of the vehicle.

Dec 2005 - purchased from Stockport Audi (former courtesy car with 13,000 on the clock. Full service and new tyres

Full dealer servicing until June 2009.

Collision with joyrider in 2008 resulting in front end damage from drivers side and 8 week repair. At time of impact all warning lights came on and car was driven by police recovery vehicle onto a low loader. Airbags weren't deployed which I found strange.

Vehicle didn't feel the same after repair but was road tested by independent assesor retained by my solicitor.

Cam belt done at 52,000 by Stockport Audi.

May 2009 - started feeling serious judder on car when accelerating through 4th, 5th into 6th.

Researched and called several independent specialists. All hinted it was the clutch and dual mass flywheel.

I booked it into the Audi dealership in the hope that if it was the DMF then I may get some sort of contribution as it's a known fault that they don't like to admit.

In short they kept the car for two days, forgot to do the MOT that it was also booked in for and then claimed it was done, and couldn't find the fault - even though the tech commented on the service report he suspected a flywheel fault.

Since then I had the cluth and DMF replaced by an independent plus a full service and brake bleed. Guess what... the fault reappeared immediately.

    So.. below is the fault:

    • Sluggish ignition
    • Lumpy idle
    • Fine through 1st to 3rd - though doesn't feel as smooth as it once did
    • Fault occurs at 60-70 mph e.g. on motorway - power flatlines, chugs and I can hear a grating/clashing sound. Can power through it to 80 and engine seems fine if a little lumpy/uneven ish.
    • One off fault noted today - car lost power at 70 on cruise control. Foot to the floor and little increase in power, faltered on incline and speed dropped to 60mph. Revs remained constant - cleared after 1hr stand and seemed okay but main fault occured again.
    • Gear stick judders around like crazy in 4-6th when accelerating hard
    • On previous Audi inspection - fuel injector seals noted as poss. replacement.

Any help really appreciated as I am at the end of my tehter and £800 down after clutch/DMF and service bill.

    Cheers

As you seem to have diagnosed this problem yourself with your research, and taken the car to an independent garage, who have releaved you of £800 and not cured your issues ,I would sugest your gripe is with them and not Stockport Audi. I would normally give technical advise, but in this case would recommend Go back to the independent that took your money.

Don't worry I will be going back to the Independent. They know about the fault already - and btw am being fair by not naming them.

However my issue with Stockport Audi is more serious:

I took the car to them in the first instance as its always been serviced by them. I listed the faults - not what I thought was the problem.

    This is what happened:

    1. Booked into Stockport Audi for MOT and fault diagnosis
    2. Taken to dealer and list of faults given to service assistant
    3. Told I'd receive a call after lunch regarding faults and car would be ready by 4.30pm
    4. No phone call so called by 4.30pm
    5. Told car has failed MOT due to defective tyre
    6. Told dealer has no tyres in stock until following morning
    7. Faults not done because of MOT
    8. Told car will be retested in the morning and car checked by midday
    9. 2nd Day, 2pm - no phone call
    10. Call at 5.30pm to be told car is finished and ready for collection first thing
    11. Arrive at dealer at 8.30am - service assistant scarpers, staff avoid looking at me
    12. Eventually seen and told car wasn't retested and therefore the MOT has not been done
    13. Look through the paperwork from the job and see tyres billed at £148 + VAT and then the dealer invoice charge to me at £380.00 (MOT was free)
    14. See that DMF is listed as a potential fault on the service report...
    15. No apology from service manager - politicians words used such as 'this is regrettable', 'embarassing' - not a sorry in sight.
    16. Service manager agrees to charge for tyres only and gives personal contact details
    17. After the weeknd I call him twice but get no reply
    18. Discover he phoned the home landline instead of the mobile I left
    19. Nothing more from him
    20. Audi UK send out a satisfaction survery -
    21. I take it to said independent for the work to be done

I am not too bothered about the clutch and flywheel costs..the clutch was worn and flywheel damaged a little so its a job saved for the future.

I am naiive and not that well up on mechanical issues - hence why I asked for help here.

Update - this morning the car was running like a dog at low speeds and chucking out a lot of light smoke. It cleared and the car ran ok for the rest of the 5 mile trip. On the way back the Yellow Emissions Control System warning light came on and has stayed on since...

Could this be the ERG or worse?

I've read your post with interest... there are a number of issues going on with your A4 that have been going on with mine.

I've had the EGR replaced on mine, which, though initially seemed to have cured the problem - the problem has returned. Today, driving back from Salford to Blackburn, the car juddered at 80mph, surged, coughed black soot, surged again and then limp mode again.

My problem is intermittent but over the weekend, my yellow emissions light has also come on. My feeling is that the engine is being choked and not enough fresh air is getting in.

I'm at wits end and thinking that I'm going to take out an aftermarket warranty this evening to hopefully cover the cost...

Here's the link to my issues:

PS after this problem is eventually identified - I WILL BE GETTING RID OF MY CAR. I refuse to have a car I have zero faith in.

    Hi,

The A4 is in the garage this morning after the Emissions Control System warning light came on two days ago. The senior service manager seemed to think it was the Air Mass Meter or the ERG. First thing they'll do is the diagnostic check to see what the fault is.

Fingers crossed it will be quick fix (and cheap) as it was getting more and more apparent yesterday - I'm not enjoying the bunny hops every 20 mins or so.

...just on the way on holiday and the fekkin Emissions light came on as well. Syptoms - bugger all power, so I assume this is the limp home mode. The Audi tech who came out to look at it diagnosed it as clagged up EGR valve, so its now sitting outside a dealership waiting for it to be fixed next week. So that's me on holiday in a courtesy car................hoping for an RS4
