Reducing the diameter of the road wheels effectively lowers the gearing ratio. Effect is greater acceleration but lower fuel economy/top speed.

Did the whistling turbo start at the same time as the wheel change, or a short while after? If at the same time, I'm stumped!

If a while after, I would suspect the higher prolonged engine revs for a given road speed have over-cooked the turbo bearings

    I really hope I',m wrong!

PS How is the Passat feel on the new wheels (apart from quick) What tyres are you using, low profile? I'm interested to know.
Speed Kills, But you will never get to heaven in a rowing boat!

You will need a code reading to confirm a turbo problem - search on here for turbo and the experts will suggest solutions for your problem. My turbo was overboosting (sticking vanes) - a full rebuild was £200 (inc VAT) from Midland turbo + £300 labour at an independent for removal & refitting. This beat the VW quote by £1000! A faulty turbo is not as expensive a fix as I expected.
