Do 'rim protector tyres' really work? I've just spent £97 refurbishing a polished alloy wheel for my GTI (crunched it on a high kerb) and would appreciate any advice from anyone that has fitted these tyres.

it does give about 5mm clearence roughly as long as you arent stretching tyres over super wide rims like the mk1/mk2 golf guys too, pretty much every new tyre has them now i think, avon zz3's have quite a thick rim on them if i remember correctly. hope this helps

Tyres with rim protectors should protect the rims if just scraping the kerb lightly. Unfortunately it is unlikely that they will completely protect if you hit the kerb hard. In my opinion worth getting tyres with rim protectors.

Yes they work and as hk and xenon say offer around 5mm buffer and will protect your rims from light contact / scuffs with kerbs etc.
I have them on my A6 and theink they're great. Saved me a few times when going thru McDonalds / BK / KFC etc. They make their drive thru's so unbelievably tight especially at the bends making it a very tight squeeze. I've had a few little shoogles here n there to the point I've got out the car to look and see if there was any damage to my rims - none evident as the tyre has buffered the rim from the kerb.
Like you I keep my rims in tip top shape, wash them 3+ times a week and keep them in as new condition as far as is possible.

    Go for them I say
