first thing to do is get the car scaned, to see what fault is logged other wise your stabbing in the dark.

    Hi there,

First of all, is the car mis-firing or feels to be?

Does it feel like you have flat spots when driving?

its hard to say what the fault is, one option would be to purchase one coil pack (around £25.00) and put into cylinder 1.

If the problem is still present, remove and put the original one back in, and put it into cylinder 2 and so on..

It also could be a MAF issue which is causing you the issues.

In regards to getting the car scanned with the likes of VAG-COM, see our VAG-COM section where members post up their location who are willing to help other members..

    See Here - https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/f...play.php?f=211

You can also put out a request in your area for a member..

We have a policy were no one charges for the service, but the member who helps you out reading the codes we recommend rewarding them with 6 pack etc of beer or some wine for their efforts! keeps everyone happy and saves everyone some cash!

    Cheers

    Rick

but you could spend £100s guessing what it could be, your local garage won't charge £80 to have it scanded, only vw will, a scan from a local garage will only be around £20-£25, new coil packs and ht leads and sparks could be over £100, and if that does not fix the problem, your back to where you started and poorer,

The symptoms are classic throttle body being gummed off with carbon, the 1.4's do this about every 10k miles, the difference is that the EML does not normally come on. I would clean the throttle body with carb cleaner (can be done in place if careful with a toothbrush), disconnect both terminals of the battery overnight, reconnect next morning and cross your fingers. You may be lucky - total cost £5.00
