Hi, first post for me here! I have a 2005 T5 Transporter SWB with a gear/clutch problem,I'll say what happened and then list the "symptoms". hopefully someone can help.. OK I was pulling away in 1st from a stand still, as I as engaging the clutch something gave way and I was left with engaged gear and a grinding noise with zero power to the wheels. AA /VW and mates have said different things, I initially thought it must be the clutch.
    1) I can engage all gears with no problem if I depress the clutch - no grinding noise
    2) I can engage all gears with no problem without the clutch - grinding noise
    3) After using clutch to engage, on releasing the clutch - the same grinding noise.

gear change seems fine, various opinions are clutch / driveshaft / differential / final drive gear??? any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Drive shaft. It's a two piece one and it strips where the two join. Common fault.

Thanks for that, also ties in with possibility from AA, one extra question then, is a tow advisable or will the turning wheels cause more damage?

I wouldn't tow it unless it's only a very short distance. Not because of the shaft, that's condemned anyway. But because of the differential which will be working overtime with only one shaft turning. For the diff it would be like driving ten miles or whatever in a circle with the steering hard on the lock.

Bob1812, yup mine needed a flat bed off the AA and then I used dragon to take it to NG motors in Splott in Cardiff, dragon cost 50 quid to take it over there (from Cardiff, so may be more from Llantrisaint), NG were recommended to me by the AA driver and also the father of a mate of mine, so two independent people. They had it done in a day and it cost 360 quid using a genuine VW new drive shaft. (i'd go for new otherwise you never know when it's going to fail again) You could also go to Welsh VW centre on sully road in Barry, hope that helps.
