If the temp is dropping down to 70 quickly and back up it is almost certainly the temp sender, mine did the same, you could watch it drop in a matter of seconds,I changed the stat also but no joy!I would change the sender £30 for the part,it will have a dramatic effect on your mpg!,also there were no fault codes stored

Bear i mind that the sensor has two seperate elements. One drive the gauge and the other the ECU. MPG is not effected by the gauge element and I doubt both have failed at the same time. If the car is noticeably slow to warm up and heat the car then it applies the stat is at fualt. However you do mention that in traffic if drops to 70-75 and I would expect it to rise and then drop when you are moving agian and more airflow. If you park the car for say 15 minutes and then restart does the car indicate 88/90 ish as this would implyt the sensor is OK although worth checking the connecter for corrosion. Regards Peter

Changed thermostat last night, took the car for a drive around town, engine heated up after 10 min with temperature dead on 90. Drove to work this morning - motorway, temp dead on 90 and oil 100 . It looks like it was a faulty thermostat even though the old one wasn't stuck open when I took it out. Many thanks, Dan
