I have an 08 2.0TDI 140 SE estate, and get belted with a static shock every time I touch the on gettting out! It f*****g hurts sometimes, and the wife now refuses to drive it (not a bad thing really, it'll save a few trips to the bodyshop).

Is anyone experiencing a similar thing?

Tell me about it, but for me it seems to depend on a certain shoes/jacket combination, and if I wear either of them on their own but not together then it's not a problem or barely noticeable.

The way I usually deal with it is to touch my elbow on the bodywork before touching any part of the car, and the static discharges (if that's the correct word!) but doesn't hurt.

I think I read that if you touch the metal before getting out of the car then that deals with it without getting a shock, but I haven't tried it myself.

I have this issue as well - 2.0 TDI Passat

Sometimes its a little crack but others i get a rather shocking blast (when its dark you can see the arc) which can be embarrassing when you shout out in the middle of the car park.

I have started letting the kids get out of the car first - problem solved (for me anyway)

Have you tried holding on to a metal part of the car (the door, perhaps) as you get out of the car until your feet touch the ground?

I have this problem, but not all of the time.
It got me in spectacular fashion on Saturdaty in broad daylight - you could see the arc - and it got me before I managed to make contact with the tailgate.

About 12-13 years ago I was at a technology seminar/exhibition and was talking to a guy who made anti-static mats for labs/clean rooms etc. he was trying to market a key-fob made of what looked like flexible plastic (about 40mm x 25mm), you just touched this onto the bodywork when getting out of the car - and no static discharges!
He sent me a sample - and it was brilliant!!. Unfortunately it finally dropped to bits a few years back and I can`t find another so I end up looking like something off "Candid Camera" as I leap across the car park shaking my arm.

Yeah, it's been quite bad recently in the dry weather.
Problem is with the plastic key fob. On my other cars I was in the habit of touching the metal part of the key as I withdrew it from the ignition.
Can't do that with the plastic fob, and I havn't trained myself to touch the door before stepping out yet.
It gives you some belt when you are unawares.

I must admit this is the first car I haven't had shocks off for a along time! Mine is the S model as above but with DSG.

Ahh, i should have gone for the S model, the E in SE obviously stands for 'electric shock'

Don't have this problem but perhaps you should try something like this:

    Anti-static key fob

    Anti-static key ring (eBay)
