This morning when attempting to lower the front passenger window I heard a sickening crunch. Immediatly stopped the window and flicked the switch to 'up'. Just a whirr!...

Window didn't move at all. Tried again, crunching on what would be the way down and a whirring on what would be the way up.

****! Is this going to be a ball ache of a job and cost me a kidney?

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

    hi niall
sound like a cable on the window regulater has snapped.you will need to take the door card off and have a look.its a bit fiddley but not that hard to do you will need to get some pot rivets a gun and a drill for the old rivets. if it is the cable its a new regulater no idea on the price gsf may carry them in if not its a breakers(found one in middleton, manchester.should carry bits in for your car dont carry anything for mine its to old.) or last resort the main ********.
hope this is of some use.
    cheers kerry

Funny you should mention this as it happened to me today as well on my Passat. The cable had snapped, got the grinding noise, then the window froze !

I fixed it this evening, as above, fiddely but do-able.

I got my kit from Euro Car Part for about £50.
