After extensive web trawling, I still have some questions regarding parking sensors for an A3. I know some of you will think why are they needed....., "just look where you are going". My answer to this is, try telling that to my spouse who still loves her greenhouse on wheels Mk2 Golf.

    Questions:

    1. The OEM sensors that I have seen fitted to other cars are flush mounted (see pict 1). The widely available after-market sensors appear to be surface mounted. Low profile they may be but still they are still not flush.

    2. Is the rear bumper pre-marked for the sensors? If not, are there any measurements or templates available where the holes can be cut? Are the cuts straight or are they angled. How are the flush mounted sensors fitted to the inside of the bumper? Glued?

    3. The size of the OEM sensors are smaller that the after-market sensors (18?mm as opposed to 22mm).

    4. I have seen only one article (AutoExpresss) that discusses the performance/quality of after market sensors. Does anyone have any real data about the different brands? I generally think that you get what you pay for but why is there such a spread in cost for similar(?) units.

    5. It has been suggested that the OEM sensors are re-badged Cobra units. I'm not sure if this is the case. Anyone know?

    6. While looking for OEM sensors on ebay, I see that the BMW OEM sensors are completley different to the "film canister" type that are widely avaiable. Are the VAG type similar?

    7. I originally intended to fit sensors myself, but would be pleased to have a recommendation for a fitter (West Mids) who can do the job correctly with the best sensors. I have my doubts about the main dealers.

OEM fitting - note 5p coin and flush mounted
Red Aftermarket sensors with a 5p coin for size.

    Thanks in advance.

I would get a dealer to fit.
The bumper is marked on the inside for sensors.
people tend to use a cone drill for the holes.
