Knocking Noise coming from passenger side front wheel..!! Help

hi guys,
just thought i'd add my bit to the notorious VW front suspension knocking noise syndrom. I've replaced pretty much everything on my 2000 w reg 1.9 tdi PD passat with 172k and still i have klonks, knocks and any other word in the english dictionary used to describe the noises that come from the front of my passat.
I even bought a Meyle HD kit from Germany and got it sent over and to be honest i'm not majorly impressed. i've put about 25k on the arms and already two of them have been replaced, both upper two on the passenger side. i'm now also getting creaking noises while drying steerin on my driveway, again from the passenger side.
i've also just replaced the two front struts as they were worse than useless and to be fair it has made the whole car feel more stable, but still the sounds keep on comin.
It's a shame really as the car is cracking in a straight line and on motorways but round our country lanes (where i live) it sounds pretty crap!
Ah well, just have to turn it up another click on the stereo!

Hi all, i had a similar problem on my 1998 18 20v passat. At 88k I had replaced all the front suspension arms except for the c-links which where out of stock at the time. I needed the car for work so i fitted the new arms and the old c-links and still had knocking sounds from the front suspension. After a few weeks of knocks the c-links arrived and i fitted them asap. The knocks where gone at last. I sold the car on with 90k on the clock and it was driving like new.

Sorry mate, I have got the same problem on my 2000 1.8t audi. The knocking noise is from the far side of the front suspension and sometimes it sounds like coming from under.

I have been advised it could be the problem of the 'front drop links' (Is it same as the stabliser link bar?) and after I searched, I found it could be the problem of the Anti-roll bar bush, now someone advise c-links (how much will it cost?)

I really don't know shall I spend money on it? cause it seems it can be very difficult to find out what cause the problem.

Any advise on VWAudi specialists in Sheffield area?

The "C" links as i call them (i'm sure they have a professional name) are really quite easy to replace yourself. jack up car, remove wheel and rest on axle stands. the c links are held in place by two bolts and nuts. undo both and remove. replace with a decent brand of link, don't be tempted to use some cheap ones off ebay. maybe lemforder from euro carparts or maybe meyle hd from germany and maybe even vw own ones but i'm sure there just lemforder ones but with a VW Audi stamp on them. bolt the new ones in and see if that works. if not it may be the antiroll bar mounts but this can be a little more harder to replace. it could also be one of the lower rear arms which secure to the back of the hub. thing is theres loads of arms/mounts that make up the complex setup on either A4 or passat and it only takes one to go before it sounds bad.
ive had my passat 2000 tdi for 4 years now and to be honest i've practically given up with trying to find the noises and my mechanic also looks lost when i drive in saying theres a funny knocking noise coming from the front, this after replacing the whole 8 upper and lower arms both sides with Meyle HD. i also replaced to tie rods and more recently the struts and still i get creaking and knocking noises doing stop start driving through traffic. i now just turn up the radio one extra click!

i am haviing a similar knocking on my 04 tdi 130sport. the off side has had a knock since i bought it. i have just discovered the cv boot is split(not picked up on mot april). is it worth changing drive shaft at same time?

Don't have time to read through the whole post, but I noticed you had the anti roll bars done. I had them done on my old, dare I say it, Vectra! The stupid mechanic had but the whole lot back together UPSIDE DOWN. God knows how he managed it, but somehow he did and it had the result of banging noises and bare metal where the bar had been bashing and rubbing against stuff. It's always worth looking for signs or rubbing/banging to narrow down your search...

I've just got back from the garage after having yet another fault diagnosis at yet another garage, on my "nr side wheel knocking noise", the mechanic had it up on the ramps and with the engine running went through the gears. Cut a long story short, with his stethoscope, he reakons it's a bearing noise, and the noise is coming from the o/s side of the gear box, and is a noisy bearing. He said out of all the bearings that is noiser than the rest. Well i'm not throwing any more money at it. German qualitat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Identified a baffle broke in a 98 passat. If you've covered 11k in it its clearly not drive train unless its getting worse.
