    Hi all,

On my fourth Audi and concerned that they 'don't make em like they used to !'

    - My Oil pump has just gone in my '55 plate' A4 at about 97,000 miles and I now know of another 6 that have gone at a similar time in various Passat's & Audi's with this 2.0ltr TDI Engine.

Unfortunately, my local Audi dealaship have informed the that the parts alone will cost nearly 9k & so effectively the car is a right off with no residual value & no recompence to my Insurance.

    - Just wondered if any other forum members have suffered the same problem so that I can gauge the scale of this problem and if any one has any idea's of the best way to get the car back on the road ASAP.

Apparently it needs a new engine, turbo & exhaust system as a minimum !!

Yep, i got it now, but i have found the problem before the mechanism gone, was very noisy. Dealers ask for nearly 1000 FOR PARTS and 7 hours labour, £115/hour. Sad..

    Hi,

What were the symptoms? If you could email me ASAP please ce.glover@tiscali.co.uk it would be much appreciated.

Tonight, mine sounded really noisy when I got home. When trying to restart, it runs for a minute then cuts off. Same when I tried a second time. I have given up trying to prevent damage.

Oil pump failure is common on the 2.0TDI.

Either the shaft driving the pump from the balance shaft rounds off or the balance shaft drive gears eat themselves.

Pretty sure VWG UK are aware of the problem and have been for some time

I have the same problem. 05/55 A4/2.0 tdi 140, BLB engine, 100k. Low oil pressure warning yesterday, towed in to Audi, so far 5hrs labour to inspect, the turbo has gone and there are also engine problems that are not yet clear.
I will keep you up to speed, but would be interested in how you are resolving the failure and whether Audi contribute.
This is my 5th Audi and I have done several hundred thousand miles in them over the last 25 years. I still have the 4th - a 1999 A4 1.9 tdi which has covered 230k. I likewise have not had previous significant problems.

I have just been told my tdi needs a modification from a chain drive to a gear drive for oil pump, with noisy and rattly engine. mechanic suggested asking for goodwill from main dealer. Was told same as you 1000 for parts plus 6 hrs time from my own mechanic. What did you eventualy do?

Could any BLB owner who has had or is having this fault, please email me details of what has happened, costs and what Audi/dealership has said.

I am compiling information on as many cases as I can lay my hands on to try and tackle Audi over this. I may not get anywhere but I can try.

Email: nathan dot mailing at ntlworld dot com

A thread over on audi-sport.net is being updated as and when I get more info.

    Cheers Nathan
It sounds as if we have a great deal in common. My 5 year old, 80K miles, BLB engine fell apart, quite literally, in June when the oil pump failed. I've replaced the engine but have no intention of accepting Audi's rebuttals on all responsibility. I believe instead that a concerted programme of protest from Audi owners linked to the threat to go public based on a "fit for purpose" argument could persuade them to reconsider their responsibilities.
Frankly there are probably hundreds if not thousands of Audi owners out there who would think twice about buying Audi again if the company was known to be welching on what should have been a recall situation.

    Hi,

05 A4 avant 20.tdi, with 93K, engine type is BLB

I have the same issue...low oil pressure warning light, noisy rattling engine. Local garage has just diagnosed oil pump balancer shaft assembly....£800 for the part and another £500 to fit......ouch.

Audi UK are not interested and advise that at 5 years old and 'above av mileage' that it's my problem even tho its got a FSH at main dealers. I'd also dispute the av mileage thing for users of the A4

I'd be interested to find if this is a common problem, this is the worst car i've ever owned , I've had loads of problems inc a air con compressor failure last year which was going to be a £700 part until I managed to find one on ebay

I was reading a copy of Audi Driver (or something similar) a couple of months back and there was an article about this. They said what a stupid design it was as the old pump design worked perfectly and the shaft system is an accident waiting to happen.
