    I was in the UK recently without any form of deflector - didn't get flashed, although I did set the beam fairly low. Probably could have got away with it higher because there was only my wife and I and some luggage in the car.

    Couldn't you aim your dipped beams at a wall and experiment?

    Then again, if you're going to France, there are that many badly adjusted lights here that no one will notice yours.....

    As rjb says. The warning signs for fixed radars are large enough, so there's no problem with GPS systems.

    And as you say yourself, radar detectors are illegal. French police have been known to literally rip them out, plus any other sanctions they feel inclined to impose....
