Hi, can anyone tell me what results they get from Vagcom for the AKN engine ? I have a registered version of 409, but TDi Graph doesn't cover this engine.
I'm getting 60/150. Is this about right ?

Guys, I have had to rebuild my FIL's AKN engine (2.5 V6 TDi) as the toothed belt snapped. All that was damaged were the rocker fingers, but all timing was lost.

Is there a way to set the diesel injector timing up w/o using any VAG tools (I have none)?

I assume set up TDC is piston 1 Right cylinder bank looking from the front of the car. ElsaWin does not give clear instructions on where the timing settings for the crank, 4 cams or diesel pump is.

If anyone can give some advice please it would be really appreciated.

Rocker fingers were busted due to valve contact with the pistons are you sure the valves are not bent. Have you got a full locking kit and cam sprocket locing clamps etc. etc. You are going to need it, and then a Vag-com to dynamically set the pump timing. Regards Peter

Yup, rocker fingers busted - and one hydraulic compensator was damaged. these have all been replaced. I have reassembled the the valve gear and none of the valves seem to be bent - they all move freely upon the rocker fingers and return freely. The engine was at idle when timing was lost.

I have read the ElsaWin documentation and I have set the cams in their respective positions, but I am unsure about the crank. Our local VAG dealership is refusing to loan any tools as they have had them stolen before. Understandable really. So, being far more familiar with the old Rover V8, and being new to VAG engines where can I get/hire some of these tools required? I have tried the usual suspects (ECP, GSF et al...). I can only guess the VAG-Com is VAG specific s/w to connect to the OBDC2 connector to diagnose the CAN Hi and CAN Lo systems within the vehicle?

Thanks for the help to a newbie so far guys!

Remove sealing plug from cylinder block. The crankshaft TDC drilling must be visible (or be able to be felt) in the sealing plug hole. Screw clamping bolt 3242 into hole so that the crankshaft is secured against turning. The plug is on the left hand side of the block.Vagcom is needed to check the basic setting of the engine, when running.

Thanks Kenney and Peter D. I have found the crankshaft clamping bolt hole. Cams are just resting in place unlocked for the moment as is the injector pump. My Golf 1 DX engine is soooo much simpler than this one! The problem is a third party partially dismantled the engine and didn't finish the job.

I am looking on eBay for the following tools: 3458, 3242, 3078, 3036, 3359, T10023, T10060 and T40011. Any recommended suppliers? Or should I just ask the local VAG dealer to supply these for me? I have found a d/l page for VAG-Com s/w but there are VAGCom items for sale on eBay... Has anyone ever bought these products and if so, does the bundled CD include the VAGCom s/w?

Again, thanks for the help so far!

    Shirley
