Evening all. Im currently looking at buying a A4, around the 2002/3 year, but not sure on what engine ect.
    Basicly im torn between a 1.9tdi 130 or a 1.8t 150.
1.9tdi seems more reliable better fuel ecomomy ok performance
1.8t has the performance and its not a diesel
Both have there benifits but i was more tempted by the 1.8t, untill reading up about them.
Whats peoples opinions on their reliability, i seen mainly coil packs and fuel pumps being a common fault but seems easy enough to fix. Anything else i should watchout for?

    thanks in advance

    Mick

The 1.8T seems to be prone to accumulated sump sludge blocking oil flow to the engine, and IIRC there's no way to find out if a particular car is / will be affected other than dropping the sump and having a good look... which isn't an easy or quick job. Regular oil changes seem to be the key, so I'd be paying very close attention to the service stamps

Haven't heard of any specific problems with the 1.9tdi 130, though I'm sure someone better informed will be along to set me straight on that...

    Thanks for that
yeah well a full service history is a must. Also im pretty hands on when it comes to cars, oil changes ect wont be a problem. Im just thinking of any major problems or things to look out for.
First thing i will be doing if buying one will be oil and filter change, check all coil packs and check the sump.
A diesel looks like its going to be easyier to maintain but im not keen on a diesel because... well its a diesel so i think that might be out the window now

Have you driven one of the 130pds? Just wondering... they're not bad. For a diesel

I concur, this has happened to me but unfortunately you can't rely on the service stamps. I bought my 1.8t (163) at 98k miles with full service history and this happened around 6k miles later. I've heard that engines around the 100k miles region are more prone.

Dropping the sump isn't an expensive job, especially when compared to a new turbo!

    Richie.

I run a A4 2.5 TDI Quattro Sport puts out 178BHP get around 40-45 mpg its great for M way cruising and a lot quicker than the 130 TDI and 1.8T .PRETTY MUCH BOMB PROOF !!
