I'm off on my annual pilgrimage to France at the weekend, and I wondered if one of our French respondents (Quatrelle?) could give an update on current diesel prices over there. For reference my local Texaco is currently charging 99.9p/litre.

Sounds about right, but bear in mind that not that long ago 1Euro was only 66pence.

I guess that if you're paid in Euros then it's quite cheap, but not if you're paid in £.

This is one of the reasons why we didn't go to France this year, choosing to stay in the UK.

But how much diesel are you going to use on your holiday in comparison with the rest of the trip? As everything is 25% more expensive than it was a year ago, the whole holiday will cost more.

1.11 Euro to the pound today tourist rate - I know because I bought some - so French diesel at Euro 1.31/litre = £1.18/litre.

Ouch!! I can buy diesel locally at 99.9p litre.

On previous holidays its paid to fill up in France, but this time I'll fill to the brim before leaving home. I can get about 700 miles out of a tank, so most of my 1000 mile trip will be at 99.9p/litre.

Fortunately I paid for my rented cottage in pounds, at the same rate as last year, so the fall in the value of the pund has not hit me as hard as it might have done. Just got the day-to-day living expenses to worry about........

its all down to Brown printing more money off the press every day... to provide for the expenses they put in on a weekly basis.... we couldn't have them short of cash... so lets lower the value of the pound to make sure exchange rates fall in the hope people spend more in uk.

rant over.. sorry about the hijack!

Diesel here is around 94 cents/ltr in supermarkets (I never use anything else). I got some on the way back from the UK last week for 92.5 cents.

Motorway prices are way above that, so fill up at a supermarket as soon as you get across.

The weak pound doesn't help us poor souls who have to live here......

Thanks Quatrelle. A bit different to the Euro1.31/litre mentioned earlier! Sounds as though, once again, fuel IS cheaper in France.
