I own a mk4 golf, 2001, 3dr, 1.9 gttdi. Due to many problems I am now selling it. So I have just bought another golf exactly the same because I like the car. Anyways iv taken it for a test drive and iv noticed when I am accelerating there is a rather loud whooshing noise! Iv driven my old golf for about 2yrs so I know what there supposed to sound like, but this sound is very loud. I am not an expert on cars, but the best way I can describe it is that sounds like the turbo spooling up but only 10times louder. If I take my foot off the accelerator its doesn’t do it, so I am thinking is something to do with the air intake?

    Can anyone help please?

But the car is not goin any slower than what it should, its flying. If there was a boost leak wouldnt that affect acceleration speed?

I would say leak in the air intake BEFORE the turbo, so check airbox and the pipe that leaves it

One place to definitely check is the connection coming off the intercooler, in front of the RH wheel arch. If you remove the torx screws holding the bottom of the wheel arch liner you'll see the pipe coming off the intercooler. It doesn't take much of a leak here to create a noise like an airline blowing compressed air.
