I have used millers diesel enhancer and recently Redex, do these products benefit the car in any way or actually cause damage.
I have read on the bottles that they help keep the injectors clean and help with the spray pattern and reduce the blake smoke effect coming from the tail pipes.

Can anyone clarify the pro's and con's to using these products?

I used Millers for about a year and I did notice that there was a bit less black smoke and the car seemed better on acceleration. But I haven't got round to buying a new bottle yet but I didn't notice any ill effects on the car. I think it is actually on sale in my local VW dealer and it was recommended by one of the VW driver magazines so I don't think it will cause any problems.

I've used the Redex injector cleaner on the odd occasion in my old Golf GT TDI (140). It seemed to cure a stutter at around the 1800rpm mark. After I'd used it once I never got the problem again! It could have sorted itself out though and just be coincidence or it could have been the additive....?

As for diesel additives possibly causing damage: completely unsure and wouldn't like to comment. In my case I've never had any ill effects though.

I know it's useful on older cars, but I would have thought that using good quality diesel (Shell, etc) would have been of more benefit?

I'm pretty sure I get more smoke from using millers. Like James_Tiger_woo says, I think good quality fuel would be a good starting point (Note to self....stop being tight and get some premium fuel!)

that envirox stuff looks ok, not sure if it would pay though I worked it out it would improve consumption by 3 - 4 miles per gallon ( i based this on details found by googling the productand getting savings of 5-6%, ) the site says £34.50 for 500ml, what i dont know is how much you need to put in the tank and how long will a bottle last.

its 33.95 on that site, it was 34.60 when I bought it last week, just my luck

The guy said that 1ml treats 4ltrs of diesel or if you fill 50ltrs at the pump it treats 40 tanks of diesel, so thats 4 x more than millers power 4

He also said that to make it easy, a tea spoon full of additive treats £20 of diesel
