I have recently got all enthusiastic about my mountainbiking again and i am in need of a suitable bike rack to fit my 2001 A4 saloon. If there is anyone out there who has any advice o suitable makes/manufacturers/suppliers i would be very grateful.

Hi if you have a towbar and intend to carry up to two bikes look at the thule express 970 I have a similar one they are so easy to use and when you pull to to go for a run on your bike they take about 10 seconds to remove and stow in your boot

Thank you to those who have offered advice. Unfortunately i don't have a towbar or roof rack at the moment so i seem to be limited to the high rise style rack that sits above the number plate. I am contemplating acquiring a roof rack so i can get the rack that allows the bike to be clamped in the upright position on the roof. My search is now shifting towards a cheap roof rack and compatible bike rack.

I do a fair amount of cycling and I've fitted a tow bar purely for transporting my bike. I like the stability of the tow bar mounted ones. I used to have a 4 strap boot jobie but that was a little wobbly but satisfactory, I think ones with 6 straps look more stable. This is what I bought, good value:

I can recomend www.skidrive.co.uk for a good range of bike and roof racks and they had the Thule 591 bike carrier for the roof rack at the best price I could find of £75 delivered. (Though check Tesco Direct as I see they do Thule too).
