I had a problem with my boot lock on my X reg (2000 model) passat estate in that it wouldn't lock with central locking. Found out it was the solenoid & thought i'd let all u folks know that u don't have to buy the whole locking mechanism, u can get the part from VW & only costs £13. Part number is 1MO 959 781 A. Got my mechanic friend to fit & only took about half an hour. Hope this helps somebody

I seem to have the same issue with my 2000 W Passat saloon, the boot lock works with the key (to dead lock it) it is pretty stiff, the actuator isn't operating but at least I can secure the boot. Will have a look at the internal workings in the week. Thanks for your info.

    Hi
My B5 Passat estate 03 reg. tailgate lock worked fine for a number of years but now it's stopped.
It actually locks when you shut the tailgate and it opens manually with the key.
I took off the trim and operating the solenoid mechanically by hand opens the lock ok but it does not operate with the key fob or the inside door switch.
I used a meter and I am getting a reading across the solenoid of about 3 Ohms which I guess could be OK. I also checked across the micro switch on the back of the lock unit ( Not quite sure what this is for ) and I got a reading of 183 Ohms which I presume is possibly to high.
Not knowing how the system works leaves me at a loss.

Is there anybody out there that could provide a link or a work through to help me locate the actual problem?
    P.S.
The unit under the passenger side carpet was replaced a year ago because of a flood and appears fine now as all the other doors lock and open OK.

    Cheers Kev

Had a similar problem on my 52 reg Passat estate. Decided at £23 it was worth changing the solenoid just to see if it was the problem. It was, and now works with the remote.

It's not too difficult to replace just a little fiddly, especially removing the solenoid and the part it's screwed to from the hatch.

Rather than creating a new thread, how do you replace the solenoid? Does it involve removing the whole handle and locking mechanism?

    Cheers

On mine (B5 Estate 97 tdi 110 AFN) The bolts are facing toward the rear of the car, so it looks as if I would have to take the mechanism off juist to undo the bolts.

I noticed that I had some corrosion in the pins to the lock sensor, potentially this could be a problem (I liberally sprayed some GT45 as I could n't find my WD40 at it, so hopefully that'll help), or could also be related to my CCM wirings, maybe?!

I can't take mine off using mole grips, the bolt head is too tightly packed and the thread is too recessed to get any purchase on it. What a daft idea putting them that way round!

On a brighter note, it's definitely the solenoid as I tested a new one and it worked!
