Having basically had the local VW experts pour over the car at great expense to find the reason I had poor performance/cutting out - all to no avail - I have determined that a faulty coil pack was the cause. Having replaced this (a the other 3 for good look) I would say the engine is about 95% ok although it is a bit flat when at operating temp and pulling away from junctions but other than that it seems fine and fuel comsumption seems fair.
The only obvious thing I can see is that the normal operting tick over revs are a circa 620 and I assume this may be due to the dealers resetting/tuning or whatever they think they did when the engine when it was effectively only performing on 3 cylinders!
Do I need to get the car on to a full version of Vagcom to adjust the idle tick over revs to a more near normal value (circa 800 I guess) or will this adapt naturally over a 100 miles or so.
I look forward to your advice.

The throttle body needs removing, cleaning and resetting using suitable diagnostic equipment such as a registered version of VAG-COM/VCDS.
