Im part way through changing the head gasket on my 1.6 driver, and ive had to stop for now because i cannot get the bottom pulley off, the one that drives the auxillary belt, ive got the 4 allen bolts out, but cannot get the funny shaped bolt out, is it left or right hand thread? and also is there a nack to getting it out? as all ive managed to do is strip the teeth off the timing belt when it turned (hopefully not bending any valves). Also can anyone give me the bolt clamping order and torque settings for the head, there are some instructions with the gasket but id like to double check. Any help much appreciated!

DO NOT remove the 12 point bolt, you do not need to and you don not have the locking tool that is necessary to install the new bolt (it MUST be replaced), remove the four 6-mm hex cap set screws and the main V belt pulley comes off.

In that case, how do i remove the belt? i have a new one, and the old one is now knackered, the protective casing goes right around the pulley shaft inbetween the auxiallary drive and the cam belt drive so far as i can see, thats why i was trying to remove it, ta.

You take off the V belt pulley after removing the four M8 6-mm hex cap set screws. Behind this is an M6 5-mm hex cap set screw at about 12 o’clock, quite deep down inside the belt cover. At around 8 o’clock there is a 10-mm head set screw and after removing the water pump pulley there is a 10-mm nut. The lower cover also has a 13-mm head set screw behind the upper cover. Do you own a Haynes manual for the Golf 2?

    You can’t afford a Ł20 book?

    http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&produ ctId=13249&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=14543

This book could save you much more than that preventing one silly mistake.

    Got a library card?
