  1. PD130 Which Oil ??? 505, 506 or 507 ????

VW change oil specs like they are going out of fashion and I am getting confused .

I want to use Castrol and in when the car was new, it was easy, SLX II Longlife. Job Done.

But this is dead and gone. Still some SLX III around, but that's old stock now.

The "Best" oil that Castrol now do is the Edge 5W30 which meets "504 / 507 and is specified as "suitable for modern VW diesel engines". I had an older bottle of Edge 5W30I got for a pertrol car which stated "replaces Longlife II"

But Edge its 5W30 not 0W30 like the SLXII and its 504/507. Does this mean it meets 504, 505, 506 & 507?

I intend to run Longlife service so want the best longlife oil (I may choose to do an intermediate oil drop, but I want to use the Longlife grade).

Just to confuse the hell out of you - Castrol Edge 0W/30 "for Turbo Diesel Engines" does not meet ANY VW spec.

OK, maybe I should trust what Castrol say (ie "replaces Longlife II"), but I'd like to know for sure.

I guess I have just answered my own question with this quote from the Castrol Website for Edge 5W/30:-

"Replaces Castrol Formula SLX LongLife II

Latest technology and specific formulation for modern Audi and VW engines"

And the Edge 0W/30 VW spec oil is NOT Longlife either.

So you can't get, from Castrol at least, an 0W/30 Longlife oil any more. I guess this does not matter.

I've used Quantun Platinum from the VW dealer. Much better value than the major branded oils at about £27 for 5l. It meet both the current petrol and diesel (incl PD) specs from VW.

Always thought it was 506.01 for 130PD.

    Hi ChillOut,

I was having the same problem with oil selection but after reading your thread I've used the Castrol web site...spot on. Mind you it does'nt like cherished number plates. Tried next doors reg, nothing doing.

    Thanks again
