Hi, I have a few problems with my 96 A4 and was thinking of purchasing a VAGCOM system rather than go to the dealer. Given the age of the car and its value I don't want to invest too much though!

I think the car needs the throttle adaptation. Is this possible without VAGCOM?

If VAGCOM is needed, are the USB cables from Ebay ok for this?

And finally...! Will it be possible to read any fault codes and perform the adaptation using the shareware version or will I need to buy the licence?

    Many thanks for any info!

Only with an equivalent factory level scan tool.

If VAGCOM is needed, are the USB cables from Ebay ok for this?
    With a full license, yes.

And finally...! Will it be possible to read any fault codes and perform the adaptation using the shareware version or will I need to buy the licence?
You can scan for faults. The code number will be given in shareware mode but full descriptions of the code are limited. Basic Settings and Adaptations are not possible in the shareware version. You need a full license for those.

Please look at this Function Chart

One final comment: there are many posts on this forum that discuss matter. Please do a search and collect the information you need to make an informed decision.
