    Hi,

    The GT TDI 130, uses cam driven unit injectors (PD) which are strenuous on the engine oil, so it is essential that the correct oil is used.

    Look for either of the following 2 VW oil specifications on the oil you are purchasing;

    • VW 505.01 time and distance servicing: change oil 12 months or 10,000 miles whichever is sooner
    • VW 507.00 longlife servicing: longer oil change intervals as determined by the car's onboard computer (i.e. upto a theoretical maximum of 24 months)

    You will hear a wide range of opinions on recommended oils. I would recommend either;

    • Quantum 5W40 PD Diesel (VW 505.01: T&D only QG0/2)
    • Quantum 5W40 Platinum (VW 505.01: T&D only QG0/2) : Supersedes PD Diesel
    • Quantum 5W30 Longlife III (VW 507.00: longlife QG1, or DPF)

    oils supplied by VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat dealers, changed every 12 months.

    NOTE: The Longlife oils are a super set of the T&D so may also be used on T&D regimes.

    Personally however, I tend to change the engine oil and oil filter myself every 6,000 miles and avoid the longlife service regime.

    Regards,
    TR7

    Yes, Quantum Platinum or Longlife 3 if you want to help the cam survive and change either of them every 6K miles.

    BTW Crasher,

    How likely are cam / cam follower wear issues on PD 130s ?

    Is the older Quantum 5W40 PD Diesel oil (now superseded by the Platinum), safe to use on max 6K mile replacement intervals, or would you strictly suggest using only longlife oil replaced at 6K miles only ?

    ASZ cam failure like on any other 130 is quite rare, unlike on the ARL 150, which is bizarre as the head and cam etc are the same. Yes, PD is now Platinum as is Gold.

    Thanks Crasher,

    I really should be using the newer Quantum 5w40 Platinum, but still have a few of the older Quantum 5w40 PD Diesel cartons lying around.

    Would the older Quantum 5w40 PD Diesel oil, changed on a max 6K mile interval still be safe to use on an ASZ (PD 130) ? I tend to do low mileage / town based driving, generally going easy on the turbo.

    I have no problems with Quantum PD BUT I did have one ARL fail a few days after putting it in but I think it must have already been on the way out.

    Thanks Crasher,

    I'll take/read that as;

    • "Quantum 5w40 PD Diesel is safe to use on an ASZ changed at max 6K mile intervals".
    • However, for optimal engine protection ideally use a Longlife oil replaced every 6K miles.

    Just to confirm; following a phone call to Quantum Technical Support, Quantum have advised;

    • Quantum 5W40 Platinum (VW 505.01: For Time & Distance based servicing [QG0/2] ) i.e. 12,000 miles or 1 year.
    • Quantum 5W30 Longlife III (VW 507.00: longlife / variable servicing [QG1] ).

    The Platinum Oil (Grey carton) supersedes the PD Diesel oil for T&D based servicing, and Quantum Longlife 3 (Gold carton) should continue to be used for Variable servicing, or those cars fitted with DPFs (not applicable to MK4 TDIs AFAIK).
