    Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm a newbie to the site and this is my first post.

I have a 2005 VW TDI Golf with the official 16 inch Imola alloys. I have noticed that the edges of the rear alloys (which are chrome) have corroded i.e. the lacquer have peeled off at some of the edges turning some areas a black colour due to stone chippings/kerb damage. I ignored it for a while thinking it wasn't a major problem, but after some research on the net I realised it was corrosion!
I want to get them refurbed and I am wondering if this is something I can do by myself? (a mate recommended using sandpaper to get rid of the corroded areas) If so, what do I need i.e. type/texture of sandpaper and paint? or would you advise a specialist doing it? (anyone recommend a specialist in the Merseyside area to do it for a fair price?)

    Thanks for advice

    Hi

    Me again!

I have read a similar problem posted back in Jan 2009 Re: Corroded Alloy Wheels by dod1e, so I know that this won't be covered under a warranty. So any advice as to how to resolve this either by doing this by myself or getting a specialist to do it would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Mateus,

The Grand Prix 17" wheels fitted to my 06 Mk5 Golf had visible signs of corrosion. The thin bright chrome ring around the outer circumference had the lacquer peeling away and the chrome was becoming very dull. The inner part of the alloy wheel was bubbling and cracking.

The Dealer has undertaken refurbishment but the results are poor - the bright chrome ring is no longer bright (it has been sprayed silver-grey and lacquered) and the bright chrome allen-head bolts surrounding the circumference of the wheel have also been sprayed silver-grey. Infact, as a result of them not cleaning the wheels thoroughly before undertaking the work, even the dirt on the wheels has been sprayed silver-grey!!! The bubbling on the inner part remains untouched!!

All done under warranty without charge. Obviously I'm very displeased with the results so i'm going back for rework.

Will report back when I know more.

    Hi,

We had a corrosion problem on the rear wheels of my wife's 2004 A3, and took the car to a local wheel refurbisher who did a full tyres-off refurb on all four wheels for £240. The wheels now look like brand new items!

If you don't want to spend this kind of money and fancy a crack at refurbing them yourself, you might find the following thread useful:
