    Hi Guys

    Great Forum
Hope you guys can help me, just bought an A4 Avant 1.9Tdi Sport 2004 and over the moon with it until i take it out at nighttime.

Firstly, when i put on my headlights on, on the Instument cluster the sidelights light always stay on? is this correct, All the cars i have had over the years and cant really ever remember if that light stays on when your headlights are on.

Secondly when driving down the road at night time, the headlights are so dull, even some oncoming traffic are flashing me, i presume thats the dullness of the lights or just my crazy driving!! (Not really)

Its ok when i put my main beam on, nice and bright but obviously cant go around dazzling everbody!!

Its so frustrating, i dont know what to do. The lights are clean, i have checked to see if the lights are working and they are.

I checked that the sidelights are on when just the sidelights are switched on and they are.

Then when the headlights are switched on, they are also on but just seems dull.

Any help would be much appreciated before i toddle off to the ******** to get them to check out and burn more money!!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

    Glad you like the car.

Firstly the instrument cluster light always stays on with headlights!

The headlights do seem rather odd. Have you checked the voltage at the headlamps? Seems there is a voltage leak somewhere. I've not come across this one before.

This is unfortunately a normal thing in non-xenon headlight on the A4, basically they're really pants!! Your options are to upgrade the bulbs to high-performance bulbs, or buy a xenon upgrade kit. Xenon upgrade kits seem to start about £100, several sellers on ebay offer kits for the A4 which people have fitted to their satisfaction. Its something im looking into on my A4, but as i've started using the train to work its not bothering me much at the moment!
'53 Smart Roadster Coupe - So much fun, so little cost to run!!

'03 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H - Currently off the road due to binning it on the M1!

'02 A4 3.0 Quattro Sport - Gone but missed daily!

I've fitted a Xenon kit to mine, the day I picked it up, so can't comment on how standard lights are, but can say Xenons are a no brainer and should be fitted to all cars. I had Xenons as standard fit on my previous car and just couldn't go back to halogen.

    As said you can get a good kit for £100 and they are easy to fit. Best to remove the headlight, but that is easy aswell, see Ricks guide;

Wow, thanks for the advice guys.

Think the route to take will be to have the xenons fitted, now winter is coming, my awful drive to work is 140 mile round trip early in the morning and later in the evening, so lights will be on permanatly, had the car for a few weeks now, only recently noticed the problems due to daylight not lasting so long.

Wouldnt have thought its a voltage leak as that is the only thing affected, no other known electrical faults. so really dont think its that.

Just think the bulbs are old and due for replacememnt, think im gonna try some new bulbs first of all and then go the xenon route if thts no better.

Many thanks for your help guys, you have been great.

Will keep ya posted once i have made the change.
