    HELP Anyone
In Short I had a problem with my gearbox ,on VW polo 1.4 2 door (I think a 6N) 1996 model so I purchased a full car to break for a replacement gearbox (I think 6N2) 4 door year 1998 ,here's were my problem started changed the gearbox & clutch no problem, gear selection Linkages were diiferent PROBLEM originally rod & cable (could not get reverse no how but seemed to locate OK) the replacement box had 2 cables for gear selection & a mechanism attached to the box so I changed this & selection box hopefully to cure this only to find the fixing point on the subrame for the cables was not on mine.I would like to use the rod & cable method but does not seem possible with the reverse gear fault. My only thought now would be to weld the fixing points for the cables on the subframe as originally on the spares car (although this is now scrapped)I know this is an unusual problem Hope fully I wont have to go down the line of another gearbox, any thoughts or help appreciated

    Hiya mate,
if your confident that it will work ok then tack weld the bracket in place, if it works weld it up, if not and you have to move it then you only need to grind the tack weld off..

It is extremely difficult to change the car from early to late system, you have to swap everything over, this is something that catches out a lot of people.

I may be breaking an early 1.3 with rod/cable but we haven’t decided on its fate yet.

Thanks for that & this info makes sense,I did check the underneath & so it catching the box when reverse was selected but rather than grind the lug off I changed the rod linkage to cable & used all the ancillaries that the new box had.The gearbox now works as it should. Many thanks for all your help on this very useful site
